Burlington Tournament Round-up
Submitted By Erika Neubrand on Thursday, January 17, 2013
The Pretty Wings Web Design U12PP team played in the Burlington Blast Tournament this past weekend.  The girls came out strong against Niagara Falls in their first game Friday morning.  The Daredevils were skating well and keeping the pressure on.  The Stingers had never encountered this type of competition before.

The Daredevils scored the first goal at 11:52.  The Stingers defence of Maddie, Khloee, Sam, and Corinn buckled down and prevented most of the shot attempts at getting through for the rest of the period.  The defensive triangle was tight.  In the offensive end, Ainsleigh scored with 4 minutes remaining in the period to tie it up for half time.  The Stingers came out strong for the 2nd half.  The forwards back checking was impressive.  Avree netted a goal within the first 2 minutes of the second half.  The play went back and forth through the rest of the period.  Dani played an awesome second period in net, preventing Niagara Falls from scoring again despite some opportunities.  The final score was 2-1 for Mitchell.  Assists were provided by Kaylin and Maddie.  Shots on net were 25-14 for Mitchell.  A great start to the tournament.

The second game of the tournament was against Sudbury.  The girls took a bit to feel out their opponents, but Carly started the scoring with a goal at 7 minutes, and another shortly after in the first period.  Ainsleigh and Mackenzie scored before the period was done.  The Stingers offensive assault continued into the second period.  Sudbury finally answered with 2 goals in the later minutes of the game.  Final score was 10-2.  Carly scored three goals.  Mackenzie and Ainsleigh scored 2 goals each.  Maddie, Corinn, and Avree also netted singles.  Assists were provided by Carly, Avree, Erika, Mackenzie, and Ainsliegh.

Saturday morning brought the Stingers up against the hometown favourites, the Burlington Blast.  Mitchell’s back checking, skating, defensive triangle, and overall aggressive play overwhelmed Burlington, and Dani earned a shutout!  Mitchell dominated the play throughout the game, but the one standout skill in this game was the Stingers’ passing.  The girls passed and picked up the ring more than they have in any other game.  The defense were worked into the offensive zone quite a bit.  Great to see the teamwork.  Keep up the good work, girls!!  Goals were scored by Sam (2), Carly (4), Avree, Kaylin (2), Erika, and Corinn.  Shots on net were 39-6 for Mitchell.

The final game of the round-robin brought the Stingers up against their nemesis, the
Guelph Predators.  Guelph came out strong and aggressive.  Their back checking was ferocious. The Predators were out-skating the Mitchell girls to the ring most of the time.  Mitchell had not seen this type of competition yet this year.  Guelph knew that they needed this game in order to advance to the finals.  Guelph got on the board first halfway through the first period.  By half-time, the score was 3-0.  Mitchell was struggling to pick up passes.  In the first period, Mitchell outshot their opponents 13-9.  The Guelph goalie definitely kept them in the game.  In the second half, the Guelph defensive triangle was very difficult to penetrate.  The Predators continued to score in the 2
nd half, adding 4 more goals.  Erika scored late in the second to at least spoil Guelph’s shutout.  Maddie got the assist.

Mitchell finished round-robin play with a 3-1 record.  This resulted in a 3 way tie for advancing to the championship game.  Mitchell's goal differential did not allow them to advance to the championship game.
