Hard work and Perseverance in Newmarket!
Submitted By Erika Neubrand on Tuesday, February 18, 2014
Wow!  What a weekend in Newmarket!  The Pretty Wings Web Design U12 PP team faced some of their strongest competition yet.  Hard work, perseverance, and teamwork were the required elements for the weekend.

The first match up for the weekend saw the Stingers take on the Waterloo Wildfire Gold team.  Mitchell was first out of the starting block with a goal by Erika N. 1 and a half minutes into the game.  With Mitchell starting slow with what appeared to be a case of travel legs, Waterloo quickly responded with 2 goals of their own.  While the Stingers defence tightened up the triangle in their own end, Ainsleigh W. and Julia Di. snapped 2 quick goals for Mitchell to pull into the lead again.  Ainsleigh W. sunk another one to finish off the period.  Goalie, Rachel V.B. made some great saves to keep the Stingers ahead.  The score at the half was 4-2.  Great defensive play in both ends of the ice kept the first half of the 2nd period scoreless.  Waterloo broke through with a goal.  The Jaci M. and Ainsleigh W. connection came through with 2 ore goals for the Stingers.  Jamison B. and Julia H. played a strong defensive game.  Ainsleigh W. scored 4 goals and 1 assist.  Erika N. scored 1 with 1 assist.  Julia Di. scored 1 goal.  Jaci M. had 3 assists.  Bri C. contributed an assist.  Final score was 6-3 for Mitchell.

Game 2 brought the Stingers up against one of their archrivals, the Guelph Predators.  League play has seen this match-up split 1-1.  The Stingers were keen to repeat the win from last weekend against Guelph, but the Predators wanted revenge.  The Stingers started out slow, feeling out the competition.  Jaci M. got on the scoreboard first for the Stingers.  Guelph returned the favour less than a minute later.  Not to be outdone, Emily A. dug hard with some great back-checking to get the ring and scored unassisted.  The Stingers never looked back after that with Erika N. and Ainsleigh W. adding multiple goals to the total.  Again, goalie, Rachel V.B. made some spectacular saves to keep the team in it.  The score at the half was 5-1 Mitchell.  The strong defence of Julia De., Analese C., Julia H., Jamison B., and Josie G. held the Predators to only 2 goals.  Ainsleigh W. scored a hat trick and 2 assists.  Erika N. scored 2 goals.  Jaci M. got a goal and assist, and Emily A. scored a goal.  Final score of the game was 7-2 Mitchell.

Early Saturday morning, after a 6 a.m. breakfast of bacon and eggs a la Gary and Shawnee, the girls took on the Mississauga Mustangs.  After a search for the right coloured jerseys, and a push to start the game early, the girls seemed to be a little rattled to start this game.  A lot of turnovers for both teams throughout the 1st half of the first period.  Ainsleigh W. opened the scoring with a well placed wrist shot.  About a minute later, the Stingers ran into some penalty trouble that resulted in 2 goals being scored by Mississauga.  About a minute later, the Mustangs increased their lead to 2. Jaci M. scored late in the 1st to bring the Stingers to within one.  The score at half-time was 3-2 Mississauga.  Halfway through the second, Erika N. powered one past the Mustangs goalie to tie the game.  With 3 minutes left in the game, Julia Di. pushed thru the defensive triangle to score the go-ahead goal.  With just under 2 minutes left in the game, the Stingers found themselves in the penalty box again.  Mississauga pulled the goalie with a minute left.  The tying goal was scored with 25 seconds left.  Jenna D. had a great one-timer in the game, but the Mustangs goalie blocked it.  Analese C. did some great stick-checking in the defensive end.  Erika N., Jaci M. and Ainsleigh W. each had a goal and assist.  Julia Di. scored a goal, and Emily A. contributed an assist.  The final score was 4-4.

The Stingers ended up playing the Mississauga Mustangs in the 1 vs. 3 game on Saturday afternoon.  After some team bonding activities and a rest, the girls came back with a purpose.  Both teams and goalies played strong in the first part of the game.  Bri C. started the scoring for Mitchell halfway through the first.  Again, Mitchell saw themselves in penalty trouble.  This time, the defence led by Analese C., and Julia De. held Mississauga to only 1 power play goal.  the girls settled down towards the middle of the period when Julia Di. scored.  Erika N. and Ainsleigh W. scored a few to close out the game.  Erika N. and Ainsleigh W. each scored 2 goals, and 2 assists.  Julia Di., and Bri C. each had singles.  Jamison B., and Jaci M. each added an assist.  Final score was 6-2 Mitchell.

Off to the finals against the Guelph Predators.  The Predators were out to prove the previous Mitchell win as a fluke.  The Stingers again started the game flat.  Guelph scored early in the first, and added another halfway through.  The Predators were powering past the Stingers leaving a wide open shot on our net.  Goalie Rachel V.B. made some awesome saves to keep the girls in the game.  Emily A. scored an unassisted goal late in the first period.  The Stingers spent a lot of time in the penalty box in the first half as well.  The score at the half was 2-1 for Guelph.  The girls regrouped at halftime, and the coaches fine-tuned the lines and plays.  The Stingers hard work , and perseverance showed through when Erika N. scored from Ainsleigh W.'s pass a few minutes into the second period.  Ainsleigh W. added another with 4 minutes left in the period to pull ahead of Guelph.  Less than 30 seconds later, the Predators had evened up the score.  With 32 seconds left in the game, Ainsleigh W. buried one in Guelph's net.  Strong defence through the last 30 seconds preserved the lead to the end.  This win took a lot of perseverance, and teamwork.  The girls pulled through in the end.  Ainsleigh W. scored 2 with 1 assist.  Erika N. scored 1 with 2 assists.  Emily A. added a single.  Champions of the Newmarket Tournament!!!!  Great teamwork, ladies!!!
