Whitby Tournament Winners!
Submitted By Deb McCarthy on Sunday, January 8, 2017
The Schoonderwoerd Bros U14 team brought home the gold medal from the Whitby tournament this weekend.  The girls were undefeated throughout the weekend, facing Forest in the final game on Sunday.

Forest was the team they met in their first game of the weekend on Friday, as well.  This opening game was a definite nail biter as Laura McCarthy scored the winning goal with only 7 seconds left.  It was a back and forth match throughout, with stellar goaltending by Amberleigh Dearing to keep the Stingers in the game.  Other markers for this game came from Sydney Smith (2), Samantha McCarthy, and Brianna Cook, as the Stingers won 5-4 in the end.  Assists were credited to Maddy Dixon, L. McCarthy and Jenna Regele.  On Saturday, the girls came out strong in both their games, defeating Whitby 11-1 and Ajax 7-1. Highlights from these two games include a hat trick from Emma Goetz in the first game, first goals of the tournament from Maddy Dixon (one each game), Regele (2 goals each game), and one for Gwenyth McKay. Assists went to McKay (3), Cook (6), Regele (4), with S McCarthy and Maya Belfour earning one each.

The Stingers played well as a team, passing and communicating effectively, as they defeated Forest once again with a score of 5-2 in the finals.  Regele opened the scoring, with S McCarthy adding the second marker of the first period. Each of these goals were unassisted. L McCarthy, Dixon, and McKay each scored once during the second period, with help from M Belfour (2) and Cook.  Dearing once again stood tall and strong in net, only letting in one goal each period.  The defensive pairs of Goetz and Smith, and S. McCarthy and Joy Belfour were instrumental in moving the ring out of the Stingers end.  A great weekend full of great skill and team play by all!
