Silver Medalists
Submitted By Deb McCarthy on Sunday, February 19, 2017
The Schoonderwoerd Bros U14 team brought home the silver medal from the Paris tournament this weekend.  The girls played some very tough games in order to make it to the finals, where they met Burlington for the second time this weekend.  Sydney Smith scored both goals for the Stingers, with Jenna Regele and Brianna Cook earning the assists.  The Stingers fought hard right down to the final seconds of the game, but came up short as Burlington defeated them 3-2.

The majority of the games leading up to the championship game were neck and neck, causing the Mitchell fans to only require the edge of their seats for viewing.  Goaltender, Amberleigh Dearing, stood strong in net and made numerous stellar saves, earning herself the Player of the Game award a couple of times throughout the weekend.  The first game of the tournament had the Stingers playing the home town team, Paris.  Mitchell won with a score of 7-2.  Goals were credited to Laura McCarthy (3), Samantha McCarthy (2), Smith and Cook, while Gwenyth McKay, Cook, and Maddy Dixon picked up the points for assists.  S. McCarthy scored twice during their next game (with Cook and Dixon helping out), but it wasn't enough, as Burlington defeated the Stingers 3-2.  The next game had the Stingers playing against Cambridge.  Maya Belfour picked up her first goal of the tournament, while Cook added two markers, and the McCarthy girls added one each as the Stingers won 5-3.  Another hard fought match against Caledonia was enough to send the Stingers to the final, as they won 4-3.  Cook and L. McCarthy each doubled up on goals in this game.  Regele, Maya and Joy Belfour, Dixon, McKay and Emma Goetz were instrumental in keeping the ring out of the Stingers' end and making first-rate passes to move the ring down the ice to their teammates.  Each of the girls demonstrated heads-up play and outstanding skills throughout the tournament, making the parents very proud.
