Whitby Gold
Submitted By Deb McCarthy on Sunday, January 06, 2019
The Mitchell Seaforth U16s travelled to Whitby this past weekend, January 4-6th, for their first away tournament of the season.  The moms came home weary, the dads a little poorer, but the players travelled home with a gold medal around their necks after winning 4 games and suffering one close loss. The championship game was played against Kingston on Sunday afternoon.

During this championship game, Laura McCarthy, with help from Jenna McClure, opened the scoring but the opponents quickly answered to tie it up. Wendy Campbell added a second, however the lead was once again short-lived as within seconds, Kingston scored again. Mitchell-Seaforth managed to take the lead to end the first period on a goal from McClure, assisted by Jenna Regele. This lead was maintained for the rest of the game, with a final score of 6-4. L McCarthy added a pair in the second, rounding out a hat trick for her, as Campbell, added her second of the game. Second period assists went to Samantha McCarthy and Campbell.

The team opened the weekend with a win as they took on Forest on Friday afternoon.  Bri Cook (2), Maya Belfour and S McCarthy each found the net with help from L McCarthy and Campbell. They were up at the crack of dawn on Saturday to play Etobicoke. It was a back and forth game, with Etobicoke coming out on top (6-5) as they turned it on late in the second period.  Cook again found the net twice, with Campbell, L McCarthy and McClure each earning one point. Assists were credited to Cook, L McCarthy, McClure and Kylie McNaughton. A 13-1 win over Pickering secured a spot in the semi final for the U16s. Cook once again lead the team in scoring with 4 goals, McClure and the McCarthy girls each had a pair, while Emma Goetz, Belfour and Regele scored one each to round out the baker’s dozen.  Kirsten McIntosh earned her first assist of the tournament this game, as well. The semi-final on Sunday was a replay of the previous day as they took the ice to take revenge on Etobicoke early in the morning. This time, Mitchell Seaforth came out fighting and never gave up a goal until late in the second period. Cook, L McCarthy, Sydney Smith and Belfour scored for the U16s, with a final score of 4-1. Belfour (2), Caitlin McKercher and L McCarthy earned the assists. Goalie, Amberleigh Dearing was solid in net all weekend, rejecting the ring over and over again. The weekend was a great display of teamwork, skill and effort. Great playing by all the girls!
